• Tropical Depression: Maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less
• Tropical Storm: Maximum sustained winds from 39 mph to 73 mph
• Hurricane or Typhoon: Maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher
• Major Hurricane: Maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or higher (Category 3, 4, or 5)
Don’t let a lower category fool you! Lower-category storms can have devastating impacts, from excessive rainfall to storm surge. Flooding and storm surge impacts are not included in the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
