Hurricane Tracker:
Keep track of the latest information on tropical storms and hurricanes with the Hurricane Tracker.
- Tropical Depression: Maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less
- Tropical Storm: Maximum sustained winds from 39 mph to 73 mph
- Hurricane or Typhoon: Maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher
- Major Hurricane: Maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or higher (Category 3, 4, or 5)
Don’t let a lower category fool you! Lower-category storms can have devastating impacts, from excessive rainfall to storm surge. Flooding and storm surge impacts are not included in the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Clouds:
This map layer shows current cloud cover across the area, as a percentage of the sky covered. Please note that the layer is semi translucent, to allow you to see the map underneath.
- Dark gray: Light cloud cover (around 15–25%)
- Medium gray: Moderate cloud cover (around 50%)
- Light gray: Heavy cloud cover (75–100%)
Rain:
This map layer shows the location and amount of rain expected.
- Light green to dark green: Up to 1 inch of rain
- Yellow: 1–2 inches
- Orange: 2–4 inches
- Red: 4–6 inches
- Dark red: More than 6 inches of rain
Wind Speed:
This map layer shows current wind speeds.
- Light blue: Light winds, around 11–20 mph
- Blue: Moderate winds, around 20–30 mph
- Dark navy: Strong winds, around 30–40 mph
- Purple: Gale-force winds, around 40–50 mph
- Magenta: Storm-force winds, 50+ mph
Snow:
This map layer shows current snow depth.
- Light blue: Shallow snow (less than 1 foot)
- Mid blue: Moderate snow depth (1–1.5 feet)
- Dark teal: Deep snow (1.5–3 feet)
- Bright pink: Heavy snow depth (3–16 feet)
- Light pink: Extreme snow depth (more than 16 feet)
Radar:
This map layer shows the location and intensity of rain and snow.
Rain: These colors mean the rate that rain is falling:
- Green: Lightest rain
- Orange: Medium rain
- Red: Heaviest rain
Snow: These colors mean the rate that snow is falling:
- Light blue: Light snow
- Dark blue: Heavy snow
